Does Google have any preferred method for image galleries?

We are creating a new site that contains an image gallery.
Been looking for Google advice on such an item but no joy, anyone know?
Are image names important?
Best to have all images on separate pages for SEO or use some JQuery to build something fancy?

Google’s new image format

Google’s new WebP image format for the web offer greater compression than is achievable via JPEG or PNG.

Now that ranking takes into account page load times, this is something we should all see appearing in a browser near you very soon. Just need the editors like PhotoShop or GIMP to support it.
